A brief history of Khormaksar School
[As you’ll see, I’m not kidding ! Hopefully someone who remembers more about it than I do will contribute a better version]
Aden was a British strategic base for many years from the 1840s up till independence in 1967 . BFES (The British Families Education Service) – an organisation set up to provide educational services for British forces abroad had several primary schools and one secondary school serving the dependants of British servicemen (as well as those of a few locally based civilian ex-pats). Before 1961, the secondary school was housed in a collection of decrepit huts but then moved into a purpose-built air-conditioned block. Although attempting to follow English exam curricula, our school had several unusual features – e.g.
working hours , unusual field trips etc. Since the British withdrawal, our school buildings have taken on a new lease of life in housing the Faculty of Education, University of Aden. On a recent visit to the area, a party of OKs were welcomed into the building and can report that it's still in excellent condition.
