Aden was HOT (and I don’t mean a bit on the warm side). "Shade" (which wasn’t easy to find) temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit were the norm. Working hours for the whole colony therefore tended to be start very early in the morning, work till it got too hot to carry on, go home for a rest and perhaps do a few hours later in the evening. School broadly followed this pattern although I don’t recall any evening sessions. We tended to start around 7am , work till mid-day have the afternoon in bed and do homework in the evenings – although of course with all the local shops open until very late in the evenings there were much better things to do than homework.
